Twitter is great! Founded in 2006 it has grown to one of the most popular social media platforms today, with 288 million active users as of December 2014. These users send out 6,000 tweets per second, 350,000 tweets per minute, 500 million tweets per day and about 200 billion tweets per year. These are some crazy numbers. So, real quick I’d like to share a few tips with you to enhance your Twitter experience.

1. Use an appropriate profile picture:

Use a photo that represents you well. If you’re using twitter for business be sure to use a picture that represents your company well. This could be you logo or even a photo of your team members.

2. Have an interesting bio:

This goes for both your personal twitter and business Twitter. You have 160 characters to say what you need to say in your Twitter bio so utilize them properly. For more tips on utilizing your character count take a look at my blog: TWITTER FOR BUSINESS: DRIVE YOUR POINT IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS.

3. Take advantage of the discover tab:

Twitter’s discover tab shows trending topics, suggests people for you to follow and show you content tailored to you.

4. Engage:

The more you engage with you followers the more likely they are to engage with you.

5. Create and use lists:

Creating lists can be very helpful. If you follow thousands of people list allows you to organize the people you follow into different feeds. For example, you can have one for friends, influential people, bands, etc.

6. Use hashtags:

Using hashtags allows you to join the conversation around a specific topic. Whether this be a TV show, ball game, or controversy. For tips on using hashtags checkout my blog: WHAT IS A HASHTAG?

7. Tweet relevant content to your followers:

It’s important to keep your audience in mind when when you’re tweeting. Tweeting things that they will find interesting and want to engage with.

8. Retweet and share other’s content:

We’ve always heard that sharing is caring and this is true. When you share other’s content the more likely they are to share your. It’s important that you don’t only retweet. You should be creating your own content along with sharing other’s content.

9. Schedule tweets:

Twitter allows scheduling of your tweets. When you do this you don’t have to remember to tweet your next blog or your favorite article. There are many free and paid for programs that allow you to schedule tweets. I have experience with two scheduling programs. One being Rignite, which you have to pay for and the other is TweetDeck, which is free. Rignite is a great tool if you have multiple Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn accounts to schedule for. TweetDeck can only schedule for Twitter, but you can connect multiple accounts.

10. Place a period “.” before @mentions

When you place a period before your @mention it shows your tweet to all of your followers. If you don’t, Twitter thinks it’s conversational and it’ll only show up in your feed, the person you mentioned’s feed and in the followers you share.
